FORMER Newcastle United goalkeeper Dave Beasant almost became English football’s oldest ever professional player on Saturday when he was named on the bench for Stevenage.

The 55-year-old was one of the substitutes in Stevenage’s 3-0 loss to Carlisle United in League Two.

Beasant is the club’s goalkeeping coach, and was named on the bench after an injury to his son, Sam.

He played for Newcastle between 1988 and 1989, and made his professional debut 35 years ago, for Wimbledon.
