Daryl Janmaat’s confident Newcastle United will improve – and quickly – under the guidance of Steve McClaren.

McClaren’s side take on Sacramento Republic in California tomorrow.

“We played much better. We played at a higher tempo and pressed better. We have to continue that.

Newcastle were beaten 2-1 by Club Atlas in Milwaukee on their first outing in the USA.

Janmaat feels pre-season is a learning curve for the players given the changes behind the scenes since last season, when the club fought a relegation battle.

The defender said: “We have had 10 days in training, and we have time to improve the football. We can do that. I think we have trained well. Pre-season so far has been good, but we have to improve. We have enough time. We play more games, and we have to improve. I have confidence in that.”

Club Atlas were further ahead in their pre-season preparations, and it showed before the break, though a more aggressive Newcastle went on to dominate the second half.

Janmaat said: “We could have scored more goals, in the second half especially.

“I think we were better in the second half.

“We played much better. We played at a higher tempo and pressed better. We have to continue that.

“It was a good game I think. They have trained longer than us.”
