ANDY Woodman is a big influence at Newcastle United – on AND off the pitch.

That’s the verdict of head coach John Carver, who was relieved that the goalkeeping coach didn’t follow former boss Alan Pardew to Selhurst Park.

Woodman worked with Pardew at West Ham and Charlton, and was expected to join him at Crystal Palace last month.

But the 43-year-old stayed at St James’s Park, where his son Freddie, 17, is on the books.

And Carver feels his coaching and personality are huge assests to Newcastle.

“I’m delighted he’s still here,” said Carver. “As well as being a good goalkeeper coach, he’s got a fantastic personality.

“In this job, you need people to pick you up sometimes. I was a little bit low when I come in (on Monday morning), but five minutes with him changes that.”
