NEWCASTLE United’s Jak Alnwick WILL be in goal against Sunderland – after the club ruled out a fresh bid to sign a goalkeeper on loan.

Alnwick suffered a shoulder injury in last night’s 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

But the 21-year-old, Newcastle’s third-choice goalkeeper, was today passed fit to play in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’s Park by the club’s medical staff.

United manager Alan Pardew had been weighing up a fresh approach to the Premier League, who can allow a club take a goalkeeper on an emergency loan in exceptional circumstances.

However, as long as Alnwick is fit, such an approach would be rejected as Newcastle also have 17-year-old Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow on their books, even though the latter is on a season-long loan at Nottingham Forest.

Hexham-born Alnwick started his career at Sunderland, who have won their last three games against United.

Tim Krul and Rob Elliot, the club’s two senior goalkeepers, are sidelined until the New Year through injury.
