VURNON Anita was today finalising a move to Newcastle from Ajax – and Alan Pardew hopes he won’t be the Magpies’ last signing.
Ajax have accepted a bid of £6.6million for the versatile Holland international and the 22-year-old, understood to be on Tyneside to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical, is expected to sign a five-year deal.
Should Anita commit to Newcastle, he will be the Magpies’ most significant acquisition yet this summer.
The utility player – who play at left-back and in central midfield – will follow the low-key arrivals of Romain Amalfitano, Curtis Good and Gael Bigirimana.
Anita told reporters in Holland he was heading for Newcastle for talks after playing in Ajax’s season-opener against AZ Alkmaar yesterday.
“Newcastle is a big club, which did very well last year,” said Anita. “Ajax and Newcastle have reached an agreement, but I have not spoken to Newcastle yet.
“The complete picture must be good. If talks do not go well, I will stay at Ajax, but I think everything will be all right.”
Pardew still has an interest in Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy, while a deal for Twente’s Douglas could be pushed through between now and the end of the month.
