SAMMY Ameobi says he’s still playing for his Newcastle United future – despite his return to the starting XI.
Ameobi has played his part in the Magpies’ five-game winning streak.
The 22-year-old has featured in Newcastle’s last four league and cup games.
But the forward – who is out of contract next summer – feels he still has work to do to convince manager Alan Pardew that his long-term future lies at St James’s Park.
Ameobi had started the season on the fringes of the first team at United – and he was a candidate to go out on loan.
However, he forced his way into Pardew’s plans, and came off the bench at White Hart Lane late last month to spark a memorable comeback against Tottenham with his first Premier League goal.
Ameobi has started the last two league games, and he hopes to keep his place for the home fixture against Queens Park Rangers next weekend.
Ultimately, he is desperate to earn a new contract at the club he has supported all his life.
“It’s been a great few weeks,” Ameobi said.
“I’m really happy that I’m getting to play. Hopefully, I can kick on from here.
“I’m playing for my career, a contract. I’m just working week in, week out.
“Hopefully, I can play against QPR and put in a good performance against them. We’ll see how it goes.”
Ameobi struck the crossbar with a shot from distance before Newcastle opened the scoring in Sunday’s 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
Ayoze Perez scored late in the first half, and Fabricio Coloccini made certain of the points with a second-half header.
The result lifted Newcastle up to eighth place in the table.
Asked about his shot on goal, he said: “It would have been a dream come true.
“I hit it and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, it didn’t go in, but most importantly we got the three points and we go into the international break on a high.
“We’ve had a great few weeks. We have to reflect on that.
“We’ve got a couple of weeks without a game, but we can’t slack off. We’re going to be working until the international players come back.
“Hopefully, we can get another three points against QPR.”
