The bid is still with the Premier League with fans eagerly waiting for a positive outcome.

Shearer, working as a pundit for the BBC in the FA Cup quarter-final game against Manchester City, said: “Something has to happen one way or the other, either positive news or negative news, yes or no.

“Newcastle are in limbo at the moment, they can't plan for next season while they're waiting for an answer. So the sooner the better.”

Pressed on whether he would like to see the takeover go through, Shearer added: “Yes, I'd like to see it.

“The majority of people would like to see it.

“It's been going on for such a long time, they need an answer, they need to plan for next season.”

Financier Amanda Staveley, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the billionaire property investors David and Simon Reuben, agreed a £300million deal for the club and lodged it with the Premier League in April.
