NEWCASTLE United would have to cough up £2m to appoint Steve McClaren as head coach, according to a report.

The Daily Telegraph claim that is the compensation figure written into the three-year contract McClaren signed at Derby County last year.

McClaren – who is focused on guiding Derby back into the Premier League – has long been linked with the Newcastle job.

And the 53-year-old was strongly linked with a move to St James’s Park after Alan Pardew left the club at the turn of the year.

However, the club did not make an approach to Derby or McClaren, and John Carver was put in charge until the end of the season, when decision on a permanent successor to Pardew will be made.

McClaren seems certain to be on the club’s shortlist along with Carver, Pardew’s former No2.

But the compensation figure could prove to be a stumbling block if United’s hierarchy decides he is the right man to take the club forward.
