Middlesbrough's promotion hopes were ended by Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Villa led 1-0 from the first leg and the goalless draw last night ensured it was Steve Bruce's side that progressed to the Championship play-off final against Fulham on May 26.

Who stood out and who flopped in the second leg of the Championship play-off semi final?

Middlesbrough (4-1-4-1)

Darren Randolph: Fortunate to get away with a rushed clearance after ten minutes. Quiet first half but a big second with big saves from Grabban and Grealish. Boro's best player...7

Ryan Shotton: Adomah was targeting his side but coped well after a nervy start. Had his work cut out against Adomah....5

Dael Fry: Nervy start for the 20-year-old but he grew into the game and didn't let anybody down....6

Ben Gibson: Gave the ball away too often first half. Dealt with Grabban well.....5

George Friend: Not his best game for Boro but produced an outstanding tackle to deny Hourihane first half.....5

Adam Clayton: Needed to impose himself on the game more. Produced a couple of good defensive blocks. Lot of sideways balls....5

Muhamed Besic: Looked to keep Boro moving but was liable to giving the ball away at times. Boro lack quality in attacking areas....5

Jonny Howson: Gave the ball away early on but grew into the game. Effort and commitment couldn't be questioned....5

Stewart Downing: Downing was another one to struggle and contribution in open play below his usual standards. Hit the crossbar...5

Adama Traore: Again the winger was being double marked but kept plugging away. Boro needed to get the ball to him quicker.....5

Britt Assombalonga: Offered little first half bar a half-hearted penalty appeal after a strong run. Subbed with 20 minutes to go....4

Subs:

Patrick Bamford (for Assombalonga, 68): Tried to make an impact....5
