Watford 2 Middlesbrough 1: Mowbray congratulates Cardiff after Boro play-off dream dies

Have your say

Tony Mowbray congratulated Cardiff City on reaching the play-offs after his Middlesbrough side’s outside hopes of securing a top-six finish ended with a 2-1 defeat at Watford.

The Bluebirds’ victory at Crystal Palace rendered the outcome of the game at Vicarage Road irrelevant in terms of the play-off picture, even if Boro had got the win they required.

Mowbray said: “I congratulate Cardiff on achieving the result they required.

“I think today to lose is a little bit harsh. When you’re in a position where you’ve got to win you gamble from a position of being 1-1 to try and get the three points.

“We lost trying to win but it didn’t really matter, Cardiff got the job done. Ultimately over the course of the season we fell just short.”

Marvin Emnes netted for Boro, but Chris Iwelumo and Troy Deeney gave the Hornets the points.
