MIDDLESBROUGH endured Capital One Cup humiliation as the pressure multiplied on under-fire manager Tony Mowbray.
The Teessiders led their League Two visitors from the ninth minute, but were stunned as James Beattie’s side hit back to grab a sensational victory at the Riverside – handing Boro a second home defeat in the first two games of the campaign.
It all looked to be going to plan for Mowbray as Lukas Jutkiewicz fired home from Jozsef Varga’s pass.
But Boro failed to build on that ideal start and Stanley capitalised to equalise in the 40th minute, when Marcus Carver backheaded home Nicky Hunt’s cross.
Accrington delighted their 185 travelling fans with Piero Mingoia’s fine strike from the edge of the box in the 81st minute.
Boro were poor throughout, but pushed hard in the five minutes of stoppage time and former Sunderland midfielder Grant Leadbitter had a fierce strike well saved by heroic keeper Ian Dunbavin.
