West Auckland edge through in Vase

FIVE EBAC Northern League sides are in today’s draw for the fifth round of the FA Carlsberg Vase – although favourites West Auckland needed extra-time before seeing off a strong challenge from minnows Whickham.

John Campbell gave West a 45th-minute lead and Ian Robson’s equaliser on 75 minutes extended the tie by half an hour.

Mattie Moffat and Campbell scored within the space of three minutes to give the visitors a two-goal cushion but at the end of the first period of extra-time, Whickham’s Sam McIntosh blasted a penalty high and wide.

A crowd of 460 at the Brewery Field saw Spennymoor Town go through when Keith Graydon scored the only goal, but Jason Ainsley’s side would have won by a much bigger margin had it not been for the brilliance of Causeway United goalkeeper Tom Turner.

He saved magnificently from Gavin Cogdon (twice), Joe Walton, Liam Henderson and Kallum Griffiths before Graydon eventually beat him with a superb 20-yard free-kick which beat the five-man wall and sailed into the top corner of the net.

Michael Chilton was Morpeth Town’s man-of-the-match when he scored all three goal in his team’s comprehensive victory at home to Westfields.

Newcastle Benfield were taken to the wire by Congleton Town, for whom Jack Graham hit the woodwork three times after Billy Ions and Paul Brayson (penalty) had struck.

Graham (penalty) eventually found the net and it wasn’t until added time that Brayson’s second goal assured Benfield of their place in the last 16.

An extra-time goal by Dale Burrell saw Dunston UTS home against Coleshill Town, for whom Matthew Brown’s 93rd-minute strike cancelled out Stephen Goddard’s goal.

The only side to go out to non-ENL opponents was Ashington, who succumbed 2-1 to Wisbech Town for whom Tom James scored both goals. Kyle Oliver was the home team’s only scorer.
