Sunderland RCA edged out

Have your say

A WEEK ago Sunderland RCA were well and truly humbled by Ashington but manager Neil Hixon was determined there would be no repeat performance when the sides met again, this time at Woodhorn Lane, in the second round of the FA Carlsberg Vase.

The Wearsiders gave an improved performance but once again the Colliers triumphed, albeit by only a one-goal margin.

There was an element of luck for their first goal. When Andrew Johnson was fouled outside the penalty area, his free kick took a deflection past goalkeeper Neal Atkinson.

Johnson was also involved in his team’s second goal on 36 minutes. His corner was glanced on by Mark O’Dea and Mattie Grieve side-footed home.

Unlike the previous game when they leaked six goals, RCA matched their opponents but it wasn’t until the 80th minute that they reduced the deficit.

Wayne Henderson was up-ended and David Southern, who had only been on the field a couple of minutes, sent goalkeeper Karl Dryden the wrong way from the spot.

In May, Dunston UTS defeated West Auckland Town in the final at Wembley. It was a close result then but when the sides met again, the Tynesiders enjoyed a five-goal romp with Andrew Bulford (2), Terry Galbraith, Lewis Teasdale and Lee McAndrew all on target.

Spennymoor Town were another side to go nap, at home to Newcastle Benfield. Amazingly, Gavin Cogden converted three penalties and missed one with Joe Walton and Stephen Richardson also finding the net. Kevin Leighton managed a consolation for the Tynesiders.

Jarrow Roofing gave Whitley Bay a difficult afternoon before going out. Paul Chow and Brad Brooking fired the Seahorses in front but when Daniel Smart cut the arrears nine minutes from time an exciting finale ensued.

Despite twice leading with a brace of goals from Ian Ward, Esh Winning succumbed at Parkgate and Morpeth Town lost interest at Winsford United who won with a first-half penalty.

Consett appeared to be on their way into Round Three when Michael Mackay and David Scorer scored but Shildon’s second-half rally took them through as Ben Wood (2) and Sam Garvie netted.

Bedlington Terriers managed an 89th-minute goal by Paul Brayson but Wigan Robin Park held on for a narrow win while Billingham Synthonia progressed at the expense of Pickering Town with goals from Danny Newby, Andy Jennings and Chay Liddle.
