Sunderland Deaf eye another national final appearance

Have your say

A LOCAL deaf football team are just one game away from clinching a second national final appearance in just two years since their formation in 2013.

Sunderland Deaf are leading the England Deaf Football Northern League and can clinch a place in the league’s North v South final as they prepare to take on second-placed Birmingham Deaf today

The team will also be looking for revenge as a repeat of last year’s final is a possibility – when they they lost 2-0 to St John’s Deaf side, who are currently leading the Southern League.

There is plenty of excitement around a promising group of youngsters, with 18-year-old striker Robert Keegan earning a call up for Great Britain Deaf U23s while Ryan Thompson, also 18, is the club’s leading scorer with 15 goals so far this season.

The game kicks off at 1pm on the 3G pitch at the Riverside Sports Complex in Chester-le-Street. Spectators are welcome and can enjoy the match for free.

Sunderland Deaf are also looking for sponsors for next season.
