STEELS Social Club completed a tremendous double on the final day of the Sunderland and District Mill View SC Over-40s League season.
Already crowned Premier Division champions, Steels wdere pushed all the way by runners-up Hartlepool Touchdown Hotel in the Kip Watson/Villa Real Cup final at Herrington YMCA before securing a 1-0 win late on.
Steels took the initiative from the kick-off and should have gone ahead in the fifth minute, when, following a mazy run by Brett Cummings, Anthony Nelson’s shot was cleared off the line by a desperate Touchdown defence.
Within a minute, Steels won a free-kick and a great ball in from Martin Swales saw Dave Harrison miss a clear header.
Steels continued to press but were nearly caught out when their keeper pulled off a superb save following a Hartlepool free-kick.
In the second half, Touchdown got on top, but they did not pose any real threat in front of goal, but Steels’ fitness told late on. The Sunderland side pushed Touchdown back and, after a great run and cross by Trevor Laidler, man of the match Phil Sowerby won the cup with a fine strike three minutes from time.
