ST CUTHBERT’S landed the Sunderland Primary Schools’ FA’s Julie Anne Thompson trophy on a thrilling finals night – edging out Mill Hill and Fulwell Juniors on goal difference.

The seven-a-side finale for years 4, 5 and 6 saw the five group winners – Bernard Gilpin, Fulwell, Hylton Redhouse, Mill Hill and St Cuthbert’s – play against each other on a round robin basis at Castletown Primary School

The competition was eventually decided on goal difference, after Saints, Fulwell and Mill Hill finished level on nine points from their four matches.

Fulwell got their evening off to a great start. Led by Ryan Steel and player of the tournament Andrew Durham, they won their opening three games and went into their final match only needing a point to secure victory.

But a very strong Mill Hill team, who had midfielder Kieran Charlton in great form, played some brilliant football in winning the game 3-0.

Seven-a-side league champions St Cuthbert’s, who had earlier lost 2-0 to Fulwell, beating an unlucky Hylton Redhouse team 5-0 to join the other two on nine points.

Despite both Fulwell and Mill Hill having good defensive records, the fact that St Cuthbert’s, for whom attackers Steve Black and Emily Hutchinson always looked dangerous, had scored 11 goals meant they won the cup on goal difference.

Victory capped a great season for St Cuthbert’s, who were also crowned Durham County Alan Grimes Cup winners earlier in the season

Hylton Redhouse and Bernard Gilpin both played their part in an exciting competition which was a great advertisement for primary schools football in the city.

Results: Bernard Gilpin 0 Fulwell 3, Hylton Redhouse 0 Mill Hill 3, Bernard Gilpin 1 St Cuthbert’s 4, Fulwell 2 Hylton Redhouse 1, Bernard Gilpin 0 Hylton Redhouse 2, Mill Hill 0 St Cuthbert’s 2, Bernard Gilpin 0 Mill Hill 2, Fulwell 2 St Cuthbert’s 0, Fulwell 0 Mill Hill 3, St Cuthbert’s 5 Hylton Redhouse 0
