AMBITIOUS Shildon saw their FA Carlsberg Vase dream killed off last night when their delayed third round tie against Shaw Lane Aquaforce was finally played at Barnsley’s Oakwell ground.
Ben Wood headed the visitors into a first-minute lead before the hosts hit back with strikes by Stefan Holt (2) and Shane Kelsey.
Michael Rae threw Shildon a lifeline, but the home side almost made it four when only a tremendous save by Kyle Hayes denied Kelsey.
Shildon’s exit means there are only three Northern League sides left in the competition. North Shields host Consett in an all-Division One battle on January 17, while Dunston UTS travel to Heanor Town.
