Redcar strike late to kill off Horden hopes

Have your say

HORDEN CW were in with a chance of claiming a point from last night’s Wearside League game with Redcar Athletic until they conceded a late third goal, writes MALCOLM PRATT.

Regular Redcar marksman James Kesterton fired past goalkeeper Stephen Hubery on 33 minutes, but, within seven minutes, Kyle Jenkins levelled with an excellent effort from 30 yards which gave keeper Dave Peacock no chance.

Midway through the second period, Richard Playforth restored Athletic’s advantage, and they made certain of all three points when Sam Webster tapped in for 3-1 from close range.

Silksworth CW and Wolviston failed to break the deadlock but were still involved in a very entertaining goalless draw.

Both sides created chances but the respective goalkeepers, Graeme Pickering (Silksworth) and Chris Davison, were in outstanding form.

Third-bottom Boldon CA lost 2-0 to Annfield Plain for whom Lee Mole headed a 10th-minute opener.

It was nip and tuck throughout, but the second goal by Mole, who pounced after Boldon keeper Connor Binney had made an outstanding save, ended the home side’s hopes.

Richmond Town edged hosts Harton and Westoe CW 3-2.

Scott Ryan’s superb volley and a clinical finish by Ben Darville had Richmond two up in 13 minutes, but Sean Flood pulled one back before levelling from the penalty spot.

Ryan, though, claimed the winner with his second goal, a speculative effort which eluded Harton keeper Alan Greenan.
