RCA safe as Team Northumbria succumb to Ashington

Have your say

SUNDERLAND RCA breathed a sigh of relief last night when their Ebac Northern League First Division status was secured with Team Northumbria’s 3-1 defeat by Ashington.

Lewis Storey was a first-half marksman for Team Northumbria, but two goals in as many minutes by James Novak and Andrew Johnson (penalty) just past the hour mark left the hosts chasing the game and it was all over when they conceded a third late goal to David Carson.

Either Team Northumbria or Bedlington Terriers will join already relegated Billingham Town and Hebburn in Division Two next season. Team are two points behind Terriers, who have a game in hand.

Newcastle Benfield were involved in a goalless draw at Bishop Auckland, who hit the post three times in four minutes just before the interval.

Jordan Lavery, Sean Tarling and Dan Hawkins all went close and, right on the stroke of half-time, Bishop’s Danny Brunskill had an effort disallowed for offside.

Dunston UTS enjoyed a five-goal romp at home to Penrith with Jonny Wightman (2), Lee McAndrew, Andy Bulford and Dan Wilson on target. Martyn Coleman and captain Grant Davidson managed a couple of consolations for the Cumbrians.
