RCA grab derby bragging rights

Sunderland RCA lifted the Allan Thompson Memorial Trophy with a narrow victory over neighbours Ryhope CW in front of a healthy crowd at Meadow Park on Saturday.

Luke Proctor gave them an early lead with an exquisite lob and Michael Charlton added a second goal following a flowing move involving Proctor and Clayton Davis.

But when Nathan O’Neill cut the deficit, striking at the near post, it was all to play for and a frenetic 20 minutes emerged before RCA celebrated.

Michael Hepplewhite and Stephen Wood were Chester-le-Street’s match-winners in a 2-1 friendly success at home to Bedlington Terriers, for whom Mark Dunnett replied late in the game.
