Northern League: Red Star rocked by last-gasp Guisborough leveller

Have your say

Seaham Red Star were within seconds of pulling off a shock result in last night’s First Division game at Guisborough Town.

Mark Collingwood’s side went ahead on 17 minutes as Liam McBryde shrugged off a defender and drove wide of goalkeeper Nick Liversedge.

With the clock running down, it appeared that the one goal would settle the result, but, in the second minute of stoppage time, the hosts were awarded a penalty for a handling offence and Danny Earl fired past keeper Shaun Newbrook to secure a 1-1 draw.

Guisborough remain third, with Red Star in the bottom six but they are now level on points with Jarrow Roofing and Whitley Bay.

Norton and Stockton Ancients stayed in the relegation zone following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newton Aycliffe, whose matchwinners were Dennis Knight and John Campbell.

Newcastle Benfield are just outside the drop area on goal difference after being hit for six at fourth-placed North Shields. Captain Kevin Hughes, Stuart Donnison, Dean Holmes, James Luccock, John Grey and Curtis Coppen all struck.

In Division Two, Billingham Synthonia have set themselves up nicely for Saturday’s clash at third-top Ryhope CW. The Teessiders saw off Whickham with two goals in the last five minutes from Stephen Huggins and Reece Kenney and are now up to fifth.

They boast the best defensive record of any side in the two divisions, having conceded only seven times in 13 games. Amazingly, they have kept 10 clean sheets.

Heaton Stannington defeated Willington 2-0, courtesy of goals from Jonathan Wright and Lewis Burns.
