Newcastle Benfield too good for Esh Winning in the STL Northern League

Have your say

ESH Winning failed to halt Newcastle Benfield’s challenge for the STL Northern League championship but they made a good fist of it at Waterhouses last night, writes MALCOLM PRATT.

Esh, who are relegated along with Ryton, held their opponents until the 33rd minute when Kevin Leighton headed in a corner.

Michael Chilton then kept his cool to slot home a penalty to double Benfield’s lead.

Esh though hit back and deservedly reduced the deficit courtesy of Ryan Kitely.

Their hopes of causing an upset ended as Johnny Mann completed a 3-1 victory for the Tynesiders who moved into second position, six points adrift of Spennymoor Town.

FA Carlsberg Vase finalists Whitley Bay are up to fourth following victory over Tow Law Town.

Lee Kerr fired the Seahorses in front on 68 minutes and two minutes later he scored a penalty.

Robert Briggs gave South Shields a 68th-minute lead at Ashington before the Colliers claimed the points with two goals in six minutes.

Stephen Young equalised and Andrew Johnson also scored.

In Division Two, North Shields are third, still chasing promotion.

Keith Douglas, James Luccock and Andy Hay were on target in a 3-0 victory over Thornaby.

Kevin Devine scored a hat-trick in Crook Town’s victory at Morpeth Town. Daniel Robinson also scored with Morpeth’s Connor Andrews replying.
