SUNDERLAND Ladies manager Mick Mulhern believes his side is peaking at the right time, with promotion now in sight.
He watched the Lady Black Cats make it four wins in a row with victory over Watford at Hetton yesterday – enough to send them eight points clear at the top of WSL2.
And he is confident that with just a handful of games remaining, Sunderland will see off the promotion prospects of Doncaster and Reading.
“At the end of the day, we’ve got points on the board now and that’s the most important thing,” he said. “Doncaster are our nearest challengers and they are eight points behind us, so we’re in a fantastic position.
“We just move on, week by week, not taking anything for granted. We take it one game at a time and it’s down to all of us to do our jobs.”
Sunderland were not at their very best against Watford.
The Wearsiders dominated the game but conceded possession needlessly at times and failed to convert a string of chances.
Mulhern reflected: “I’m delighted to get the right result because we were a little sloppy at times.
“We did most things right though and the positives outweighed the negatives.
“We started really well, maybe eased off a little after getting two quick goals, but we had a word about that at half-time and we got our two-goal advantage back very quickly.
“Now it is just a case of keeping it going. I’m not too concerned with the number of wins or draws, I just know we haven’t been beaten this season and we’ve got to be pleased with that.
“I think we are hitting form at the right time and all we’ve got to do now is keep on doing the right things and not worry about anyone or anything else.”
Sunderland’s next game is away to fourth-top Yeovil this weekend, and they then host rivals Doncaster at Hetton on Saturday, October 4.
