Missed chances cost Durham City

Have your say

DURHAM City paid the penalty for failing to convert several good scoring opportunities as visitors Warrington Town won last night’s Evo-Stik League Division One North game 3-1.

City almost went ahead in the fourth minute. David Dowson was clean through but goalkeeper Paul Pritchard made a fine save and Amar Purewal fired the rebound over the crossbar.

It took the home side only another three minutes to score the opening goal. A great cross from Tommy English picked out Dowson and this time he made no mistake, beating Pritchard with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

City were to rue the missed opportunities and against the run of play, conceded the equaliser through Andy Heald who beat Lewis Graham from 30 yards.

It was all Durham and before the interval Dowson drove into the side netting and English was just off target following another exciting raid which carved open the visitors’ defence.

Amar Purewal again cleared the crossbar before being thwarted by another excellent save from Pritchard.

Warrington had limited scoring chances but made them count. They went in front on 54 minutes as goalkeeper Lewis Graham was beaten by Alan Collins’ lob.

English rattled the visitors’ post and Pritchard needed two attempts to save a good strike from Thompson.

Substitute Gary Brown tested Pritchard from some distance before Warrington went two goals up on 70 minutes.

The City team backed off and allowed Sam Finley a clear shot from 35 yards which eluded the despairing Graham.

There was still time for Durham to mount a series of raids. A Thompson shot lacked power, Amar Purewal’s drive was deflected for a corner and once again Pritchard came to Warrington’s rescue, saving from Stephenson in the final minute.
