Mead sub in Euro opener

SUNDERLAND Women’s striker Beth Mead enjoyed an 11-minute substitute run-out as England began their Uefa European Women’s Under-19 Championship campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw.

England keeper Lizzie Durack saved a second-half penalty to preserve her clean sheet in a determined display against a France side who had the better of the possession in Llanelli.

Mead, a prolific scorer for Sunderland, will hope to land a start when England meet hosts Wales tomorrow before tackling Denmark on Sunday. The Danes beat Wales 1-0 yesterday.

Coach Mo Marley said of the opening performance: “It was a very resilient and mature performance. The players held on well under so much pressure.

“We didn’t have a lot of the ball but we made it quite difficult for France to break us down.”
