Martin makes sure of West End progress

SUNDERLAND West End got their season off to a flier by reaching the Monkwearmouth Cup quarter-finals.

Despite going behind to Dale Bell’s 67th-minute strike at Leam Rangers, the Wearsiders hit back to claim a superb 2-1 win in the first-round tie.

Ironically, a mistake by former West End goalkeeper Scott Young, making his debut, led to the 75th-minute equaliser. He failed to deal with a free-kick and Andy Upperton struck.

A minute later, the Leam defence was again culpable as Kieron Martin fired in the winner.

Richmond Town secured a 2-0 preliminary round win over Cleator Moor, with Michael Gunnell and Kallum Holbrook, from the penalty spot after keeper Craig Devine was red-carded, doing the damage.
