SEAHAM Red Star made a dream start to their Ebac Northern League Second Division season, recording a comprehensive 3-0 home victory over Willington, with Tommy English the architect of their success.
English produced crosses for the first two goals, which were headed past keeper Ryan Mundell by Carl Thorp and summer signing Adam Johnston. Then, in the last minute, Channon North drove in Red Star’s third from 10 yards after Johnston got to the line to square the ball back.
Mundell made an outstanding save to deny Michael Turnbull and also kept out an effort from Johnston.
Washington were second best at Stokesley SC, for whom Ashley Levan, Connor Hood and Gary Redman beat goalkeeper Shaun Metcalfe. Keiran Atkinson was the Newtowners’ only scorer in a 3-1 reverse.
Chester le Street also suffered an opening-day defeat, 2-1 at Whitehaven who led with a brace by Darren Donald before Andrew Grant-Soulsby threw the Cestrians a lifeline.
Birtley Town left it very late before defeating Darlington RA. Callum Thorpe fired Birtley ahead on 11 minutes, but RA hauled themselves level two minutes into stoppage time. Incredibly, there was still time for Dylan Morse to head a dramatic winner.
North Shields and Jarrow Roofing are widely tipped as promotion challengers, but the Robins claimed victory in Saturday’s clash thanks to an only goal, former Roofing player Dan Smart slamming his shot into the corner of the net after just 18 minutes.
