REPORTS that Kelly Smith is to face no Football Association probe over her on-line rant at Sunderland defender Abby Holmes may yet be wide of the mark.

BBC Radio 5 Live news reported today that the FA plan to take no action against the England legend who yesterday accused Holmes of trying to do her “serious damage” in the Arsenal v Sunderland match last month.

Holmes had brought down Gunners sub Smith 18 minutes from time at Meadow Park, where referee Stuart Franklin awarded a penalty and showed the right-back a red card.

Smith was carried off and has since had an op to repair ligament damage after falling awkwardly under the challenge.

The 36-year-old, writing in a no-holds-barred blog, called the defender’s challenge “disgraceful” and claimed Holmes is “clearly not good enough to be playing at this level”.

5 Live’s sports bulletin said that the FA viewed Smith’s comments as “opinion”.

But an FA spokesman has told the Echo that the governing body is “aware of the comments” made by Smith but would not expand on whether there could be any further action.

Sunderland AFC have, thus far, made no comment.
