Brandon United, in the bottom half of the Ebac Northern League Second Division, rocked First Division high-fliers Washington by taking a two-goal lead in Saturday’s FA Vase first qualifying round tie – but the Mechanics recovered to win 7-2.
The hosts were exuberant as Joe Calvert and Vinny Gash scored and a big upset was on the cards.
However, once John Butler and Joe Walton scored within a minute to level the scores, Washington took control.
In the second half, five goals flowed from Walton, completing his hat-trick, Mark Davison (2) and James Cassidy as the Mechanics clinched a trip to South Shields in the next round.
Chester-le-Street edged neighbours Birtley Town 4-3 in the league last Wednesday but eased to victory in their rapid Vase rematch.
Ben Johnson, Jake Stafford, Scott Heslop, Craig Mickle and Michael Hepplewhite swept the Cestrians to an emphatic 5-0 victory, and a home tie against Heaton Stannington in the next round.
Seaham Red Star conceded a fourth-minute penalty to Craig Lines but comfortably reached the next round with a 3-1 victory at home to Second Division Billingham Town – and they next visit Jarrow Roofing.
Nick Kane levelled before Paul Gardiner and Robbie Bird, with the best goal of the four, turned the tables.
Durham City also leaked the opening goal to Northallerton’s Colin Anderson. But Chris Wallace’s clinical second-half hat-trick clinched a 3-1 City win, and a trip to Bedlington Terriers.
Ryhope CW were first to score, courtesy of Craig Hughes, but went out against visitors Darlington RA, for whom Harvey Saunders was another hat-trick hero.

Four-time Vase winners Whitley Bay hit Willington for six, courtesy of Adam Shanks (3), Alex Kempster, Stephen Young and Robbie Williamson. The Hall Lane side managed two replies, from Conor Lowes and Adam Burnicle.
Esh Winning took Hall Road Rangers to extra time before losing 3-2, despite goals from Dominic Langton and Dan Pearson.
West Auckland defeated hosts Crook Town 2-0 with strikes by Ross Gardiner and Shaun Hudson. Inconsistent Hebburn Town came good to see off Knaresborough Town 4-1 thanks to Channon North’s hat-trick and a Glen Hargrave strike.
Team Northumbria, Norton and Stockton Ancients, Heaton Stannington and Morpeth Town progressed, but Ryton and Crawcrook Albion, Thornaby and Penrith all lost.
There will be two replays tomorrow night. Alnwick Town, who drew 2-2 at Billingham Synthonia, host the return as do Whickham, following a 0-0 draw at Thackley.
