Holders North Shields face a daunting replay to keep alive their dreams of a second successive Wembley appearance.

The Robins were held to a 1-1 draw after extra time by Runcorn Town at the Daren Persson Stadium in last night’s delayed third round clash.

Gary Ormston fired the Robins into a 37th-minute lead, converting from close range following a corner.

Runcorn, from the North West Counties League’s Premier Division, levelled in first-half stoppage time when Chris Lawton headed home a Paul Shanley free-kick.

Runcorn had been the better side in the opening half, but the Robins dominated late in the game and almost snatched the winner with a superb effort from Dean Holmes which flew narrowly wide.

The sides will meet again at Runcorn’s Pavilions ground on Monday (7.45pm).

Whickham progressed to the third round of the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Trophy when a single goal by David Fitzpatrick proved sufficient at Heaton Stannington.

West Auckland’s Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup tie at Bedlington Terriers was postponed.

Northern League Second Division leaders South Shields have completed a transfer swoop on neighbours Jarrow Roofing by sealing the signing of Danny Carson, 26.

The centre-back, who can also play in midfield, could be in contention to make his Shields debut in Saturday’s game against Alnwick Town at Mariners Park.
