Ex-SAFC man Smith exits Chester for Gateshead

Manager Anthony Smith has left Chester-le-Street after just nine months in charge of the Ebac Northern League Second Division club, to take up an appointment with Gateshead, writes Malcolm Pratt.

Chairman Joe Burlison said: “We knew it was inevitable that Anth would eventually move on to a higher level, but we hoped to keep him for two or three seasons.

“Joining Gateshead was an offer he couldn’t turn down. In his short time with us, he built up a side which finished last season’s campaign strongly and he was confident the club could move forward during next season.”

Colin Wake, number two to former Sunderland left-back Smith, will now take on the manager’s role and will be assisted by Ian Davison, a former Chester player who last season managed Tow Law Town.

“In Colin and Ian, we have a young management team with the desire and commitment to take the club forward and build on what Anth Smith achieved,” added Burlison.
