DURHAM City moved into fourth position in the Evo-Stik League Division One North with an excellent 2-1 victory at fellow promotion chasers Lancaster City, writes MALCOLM PRATT.
David Dowson almost gave Dickie Ord’s on-song City a fifth-minute lead and only a goal-line clearance by Lee Dodgson denied Ross Wilkinson.
In a rare home attack, James Winter was forced to turn a well-struck effort from Jack Duggan over the bar before the deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute with an own goal.
There was no pressure when Neil Marshall attempted a lobbed back-pass which eluded goalkeeper Martin Fearon and sailed into the net.
Arjun Purewal came to City’s rescue in a rare Lancaster attack. Dave Swarbrick was clean through but the defender made a superb tackle in the box.
Six minutes into the second period Durham went two goals up. Amar Purewal pierced the home defence and after holding off a defender, Dowson crashed the ball into the net.
Lee Dodgson nearly reduced the home side’s deficit and when they built up pressure towards the end, City conceded an 84th-minute goal to Jack Duggan which set up a frenetic finale.
