HEBBURN Town remain firmly entrenched at the bottom of the Ebac Northern League First Division following last night’s 3-1 defeat at Crook Town, writes MALCOLM PRATT.

The South Tynesiders edged the opening half and went in a goal ahead, with Callum Smith heading past Barry Poskett after 39 minutes.

Craig Hughes, though, levelled early in the second half when he ran at the defence before firing wide of keeper Kevin Morton.

Soon after, Kyle Davis drove home Crook’s second, and he added a killer third goal just before the end.

Hebburn are 12 points from safety and are joined in the relegation zone by Billingham Town and Team Northumbria.

Morpeth Town are just outside the bottom three after going down 5-3 to Consett in a Craik Park thriller.

Michael Mackay gave the Steelmen early lead, but Michael Chilton’s double edged Morpeth in front. With the final kick of the first half, however, Anthony Lund equalised with a long-range effort.

Luke Sullivan added Consett’s third, only for Shaun Taylor to level, but the visitors took all three points with a stunning Calvin Smith strike and a late, close-range effort from Sullivan.

Shildon opened up a three-point lead at the top by winning 2-1 at Marske United, although Spennymoor Town have four games in hand.

Early strikes by Lee Paul Scroggins and Ben Wood had Shildon in a strong position before Danny Earl cut the deficit on 58 minutes.

Newcastle Benfield were flattered by the 5-1 scoreline against Billingham Synthonia.

Paul Brayson rifled a hat-trick and player-manager Stephen Bowey also netted before Michael Sweet claimed a consolation for Synners. Michael Riley hit Benfield’s fifth in stoppage time.

Lowly Esh Winning hit back to level at 2-2 through Paul Richardson and Anthony Ward, but leaders Heaton Stannington finished strongly to win 5-2 and move four points clear.

Jonathan Wright (2), Brian Dodsworth, Kevin Carr and Daryl Clay did the damage.

North Shields are fourth after winning 5-0 at Brandon United where a superb man-of-the-match performance by Daniel Smart was rewarded with four goals. Keiran Wrightson also netted.
