EBAC Northern League runners-up Spennymoor Town just edged fourth-from-bottom Newcastle Benfield in yesterday’s Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup Final played at Belle Vue Park, Consett.
There were a couple of early chances for the Tynesiders before Moors scored the only goal in the 19th minute.
A good crossfield pass by Michael Rae was helped on to Gavin Cogdon and he gave Benfield goalkeeper Andrew Grainger no chance from close range.
Benfield were unfortunate when a good effort from Kevin Leighton grazed the woodwork, but it took a tremendous block by Grainger to prevent Mark Davison doubling Moor’s lead.
Just before the end though, only a superb save by Spennymoor goalkeeper Robert Dean prevented Sam Norris from equalising.
H Prudhoe Town lifted the Tyne and Wear LGV Wearside League Cup following a penalty shoot-out with Richmond Town on Saturday.
Stephen Foster gave Prudhoe a 43rd-minute lead when he fired home from just outside the penalty area and mid-way during the second half Colin Anderson headed in the North Yorkshire club’s equaliser.
There were no further goals following extra-time and Prudhoe celebrated victory when they won 5-4 on penalties.
