SUNDERLAND RCA are still in with a chance of avoiding relegation from the Ebac Northern League First Division following last night’s crucial victory over Billingham Town at Meadow Park.
The Wearsiders knew that nothing short of victory would suffice and a brace of goals by Jamie Clarke saw them home.
After 27 minutes, he headed in a Nick Kane cross and on 70 minutes Clarke converted a penalty awarded after he had been brought down.
RCA are now two points behind Newcastle Benfield as the pair battle it out to avoid the drop.
The Wearsiders’ last game is at home to Shildon while Benfield have two fixtures to fulfil at Spennymoor Town and Consett.
Mid-table Billingham Synthonia thumped a below-strength Bishop Auckland 8-0 at Heritage Park as the goals flowed from Chay Liddle with a hat-trick, Nathan Porritt (2), Stephen Huggins (2) and David Abel.
Dunston UTS beat Team Northumbria with an Andy Bulford goal.
H Spennymoor Town look to add the Durham Challenge Cup to the FA Carlsberg Vase which they won on Saturday, when they meet Bishop Auckland in the final at Eppleton CW tonight (7.30 pm).
