RYHOPE CW won last night’s crucial Second Division clash at home to Jarrow Roofing.

Martin Swales’ title-chasing side are now only eight points behind leaders Crook Town, with three games in hand and a significantly better goal difference.

Midway through the opening half, Chris Winn was brought down and John Butler despatched the penalty past Roofing goalkeeper Josh Carmichael for the only goal of a fiercely contested showdown.

Roofing stay third while Seaham Red Star and North Shields advanced their promotion claims.

Red Star saw off a determined challenge from Washington by the odd goal in three. Channon North gave Star a first-minute lead and, after Lee Hamilton levelled, Craig Malley lobbed goalkeeper Chris Bannon for a 16th-minute winner.

Seaham moved into sixth place, equal on points with North Shields who improved their promotion prospects and dented those of Morpeth Town when they won at Craik Park with a last-minute Dean Holmes strike.

Keith Douglas had given the Robins a 55th-minute lead only for Michael Hall to equalise. The game was drifting towards a draw until Holmes hit the winner.
