Ashington dump RCA out of the FA Cup

Have your say

SUNDERLAND RCA crashed out of the FA Cup last night as Ashington produced a strong second-half rally to win their extra preliminary round replay at Meadow Park, writes MALCOLM PRATT.

Neil Hixon’s men just had the edge in an even first half, following David Gordon’s cracking 25-yarder after he was set up by Aristote Lakonga.

The visitors missed a golden opportunity to equalise two minutes after the break, Marc Walton blasting a penalty high over the bar, but RCA’s relief was shortlived.

Ashington dominated the second 45 minutes and were rewarded in the 70th minute when Andy Johnson gave goalkeeper Neal Atkinson no chance with a strong finish.

Soon after, Andy Dugdale’s through ball found Phil Bell free and he curled his shot wide of Atkinson for the winner.

Chester-le-Street exited 1-0 at Billingham Town, who clinched a trip to Durham City with a late Micky Dunwell strike – after Jamie Owens’ shot rebounded from the post.

Birtley Town saw off a strong challenge from North Shields, Danny Smart ensuring a 2-0 victory with a last-minute penalty. Jack Honour headed their 33rd-minute opener as Birtley clinched a home date with West Auckland

Jarrow Roofing produced an excellent performance in Yorkshire to defeat Pickering Town 3-2 after twice trailing, with Lee McMahon (2) and Craig Nelson netting.

South Shields won an incredible replay 6-5 at Darlington RA, thanks to Johnny Wightman (2), Chris Feasey (2), Peter Kane and Lee Bell.

H Ebac Northern League champions Spennymoor lifted the JR Cleator Cup, beating Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup winners Team Northumbria 2-0, with late goals from Micky Rae and Mark Davison.
