Left-back Anthony Callaghan, newly signed from Northern League Division One high-fliers Washington, made his Darlington 1883 debut on Tuesday.
Callaghan, 21, an ex-Sunderland youth-teamer, has impressed in the Mechanics’ unbeaten start tot the league season, securing the attention of Darlo boss Martin Gray.
He came on for the final 10 minutes of Tuesday’s win at Ashton United which saw the Quakers claim top spot in the Evo-Stik League’s Premier Division, moving above Blyth Spartans, when Graeme Armstrong converted a late corner from ex-Sunderland midfielder Adam Mitchell.
Gray said of Callaghan, a one-time England U16 international: “He’s a very talented footballer who can play down the left side. He’s got great quality on the ball, and is quick.
“I’m looking forward to working with him,” he told darlingtonfootballclub.co.uk
