Local lad Michael Woods might not be able to go out in York tonight after scoring the winner in Hartlepool United’s 2-1 victory at Bootham Crescent.
Woods, from Pocklington just outside the city, netted from Rakish Bingham’s cross nine minutes from time.
It needed a deflection from defender Dave Winfield to beat his old Pools team-mate, Scott Flinders, in the Pools goal.
But, as the saying goes, they all count.
His goal came 11 minutes after Billy Paynter had put Pools level with a sumptuous finish into the top-left corner from the edge of the home area.
Pools had trailed for the first time this season when Reece Thompson scored his first goal for the Minstermen, but the day belonged to Woods.
“It was a great feeling, personally and from a team perspective,” said the midfielder.
“The first half we had to dig in, we’ve shown that this season, last year we could have been two or three behind.
“On a personal level it has been a tough few months so to come to my local club and nick the winning goal in front of family and friends and 1,800 brilliant Poolies was something special.”
