DAVID Mirfin is happy to be the voice of experience at the back for Hartlepool United, guiding the next generation of Pools defenders.

The 29-year-old Yorkshireman is on loan from Scunthorpe United until the end of the season and he has been paired with Scott Harrison – who by his own admission, can be a hothead.

Mirfin, described as a “calming influence” by Harrison, says the former Sunderland defender is just keen to impress.

He added: “It is perhaps just Scott’s temperament – he wants to impress and do well.

“He will only learn by playing more games and if I can help with a quite word by saying just leave it or calm down, then that is a good thing.

“I think from the two games I have played with Dan Jones, he reminds me of myself with his temperament.

“I wouldn’t say he was laid back but he keeps his head well, he concentrates on the job he has to do.”

Mirfin recently extended his loan but there is an instant recall in place, with League One Iron able to recall Mirfin with 24-hours notice, For now, Mirfin is happy to be playing regular football after a frustrating spell out through injury.

He added: “Scunthorpe are getting reports back on me. They have had a few, which is nice to know.

“Hopefully I am at an age that they know they can trust me to know I am doing what I can do every game.”
