Craig Hignett today made his sixth signing of the summer by bringing in Toto Nsiala.

The much-vaunted central defender has joined on a free transfer from Grimsby Town.

Pools were shy of a central defender following the end of Adam Jackson's successful loan spell.

And Nsiala, 24, certainly appears to fit the bill,

Standing 6ft 4in, the centre-half was one of the stars for the Mariners, who went to Wembley twice last season and clinched promotion back to the Football League thanks to a victory over Forest Green Rovers.

Nsiala was offered new terms at Blundell Park but Hignett has tempted him to Grimsby's League Two rivals.

"He’s big, quick, aggressive, good in the air and is a defender who defends – he’s everything you’re looking for,” explained Hignett in an interview with the club website.

“He’s a good age and has just come off the back of a really good season at Grimsby.

"He’s an ambitious lad and now he wants to kick-on.

"We saw him play quite a few times last season and all the reports we got back on him were excellent; we knew he was out of contract so Curtis and I went to speak to him."

The former Everton youngster joins Nicky Deverdics, Ben Dudzinski, James Martin, Jake Orrell and Ben Pollock as new additions to the Pools squad.

Born in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he moved to England in 2002 when he was just 10, settling on Merseyside anfd going on to play for Everton’s Youth Team.

He has been capped by DR Congo and has also played for Accrington, Vietnamese outfit TDCS Dong Thap, and Southport before moving to Grimsby in the summer of 2014.
