Hartlepool United’s Hughes: Dig deep!

Have your say

JOHN Hughes will tonight ask his Hartlepool United players to “dig deeper in the well” as they bid to stay afloat in League One.

Pools welcome Colchester United to Victoria Park knowing that only victory will suffice if they are to resurrect their survival campaign.

Hughes’ men were beaten 3-0 at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday – their first defeat in eight outings – and remain eight points from safety going into this evening’s game against the 19th-placed U’s.

And the Pools boss insists his players must call upon both their mental and physical reserves if they are to scramble clear of danger.

“It’s hard to keep asking them to go back and dig deeper into the well and find more – but this time of the season that’s what you’ve got to do,” Hughes said.

“You have to find that motivation to say ‘I’m going to lead from the front’. We need to use the disappointment from Saturday as fuel going into tonight.”

Hughes will only consider one change and that is dependent on the fitness of Simon Walton. Pools were forced to change their starting XI for the first time seven matches at the weekend after the midfielder failed a fitness test, but he should be fit to play tonight.
