MICK Wadsworth has challenged his record-breaking stars to extend their unbeaten run long into the new season.
The current vintage of Pools aces etched their name in the history books as they made it seven without loss from the outset of the campaign following Saturday’s 2-1 win at Carlisle United.
That made it a best-ever start to a league season for Wadsworth’s boys as they held their sixth-placed position in the table.
And the Pools boss believes his side are showing no signs of letting up.
“It (the record) is great for the fans and the players,” he told SportMail today.
“It’ll not last forever but let’s try and get to 20-odd - it would be fantastic if we could do that.
“It’s a great start to the season and I’ve said to the players ‘do you want to kick on now?’.
“What’s the next step? Can we kick on?
“The trick is to keep going and you work harder when you’re winning to keep on improving and getting better, which I still feel we can.
But it’s a terrific start and all credit to the players for that.”
For former Cumbrians chief Wadsworth it was the first time he has tasted victory at Brunton Park since leaving the club in 1996.
And he admits that made the hard-fought success all the sweeter.
“I’m delighted we’ve won and it’s fantastic for me to go there and win because I’ve got some wonderful memories and good friends there,” he went on.
