WHEN Scott Fenwick signed for Hartlepool United, one of the first fixtures he circled was Portsmouth away.

This weekend, the 24-year-old former Dunston UTS and Durham City striker will get to taste the atmosphere at Fratton Park for the first time when Pools make the long trip to the south coast.

Gateshead-born Fenwick said: “It will be a nice feeling to go to Portsmouth in front of a big crowd and take three points.

“I looked out for that game straight away when I signed, the chance to play in front of so many supporters is fantastic.

“I spoke to the lads about last season down there and they said they couldn’t hear anyone talking it was so noisy and different to what they were used to.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

He believes his game has improved, under the guidance of boss Ronnie Moore, and he is also feeling the benefits of training full time.

Fenwick added: “Eight weeks ago I couldn’t have done the sort of shift I put in against Plymouth.

“I’m a lot fitter now. I’m stronger and I’m learning.

“I know the gaffer says about my non-league habits but I’m coming out of my shell now.

“I don’t mind having a go at people when they should be doing more – it’s about learning the game.

“At non-league, I’ve been the target man – bump it up, hit me and I’ll hold it up but in this league there are better defenders.

“They are composed, like to play football, and do things better.

“It’s about learning where to run and where to be and do defensive duties, which I’ve never done before.”
