Dutch winger Sidney Schmeltz desperate to help Hartlepool United win points

Bottom-side Pools are without a league win in five matches, have a goal difference of minus 16 and have scored just 12 goals all campaign ahead of the visit of York City.

Both sides find themselves at the wrong end of the Sky Bet League Two table, with the Minstermen fourth-bottom and just three points better off than Paul Murray’s squad.

Schmeltz – who was one of Murray’s first signings in management – said it is vital that Pools pick up all three points tomorrow.

He told SportMail: “This game is a big one.

“It is a derby match and no matter how we win, we have to win.

“That is the most important thing at the moment, getting some points.

“I really enjoyed my experience at the Vic the first time around, it was a great atmosphere against Newport County when we came back from 2-0 down.

“The fans that day were superb and really took to me.

“Hopefully it will be the same tomorrow because they were the 13th man that game and helped us a lot.

“We are 100 per cent confident we can get out of the position we are in.

“There is definitely enough in the squad, as long as we keep our focus and do everything properly.”

The 25-year-old Dutch winger had been out of football and living back home in Holland for the past eight months before Murray brought him to Pools on trial, signing him on a free transfer.

Schmeltz added: “It has been going perfectly since I arrived and I am loving my time here.

“I have settled in really well and the lads are helping me out a lot.

“It was great to come into the squad and then go straight into the side – you couldn’t ask for a better start to be fair.

“Those matches we have played weren’t the best so I am now looking forward to what happens next.

“My head will be fully focused and whether I start tomorrow or I am on the bench, I will do my very best to make a good impact.”

Since coming into the side Schmeltz has played wide left, behind Marlon Harewood up front, and also on the right side.

The flying Dutchman sees himself as a left winger but is more than happy playing anywhere under Murray, the pair having previously worked together when the Pools boss was a first team coach at Oldham Athletic.

“I used to be a left winger and played my best matches on the left wing,” Schmeltz told SportMail.

“But I can play multiple positions.

“If you are a car mechanic, you don’t just replace the tyres you have to fix the engine and do multiple other things.

“I can play Number 10, on the right wing, on the left wing, striker – it is all good.”
