Boss Colin Cooper had hoped to get the defender back to Pools where last season he played 46 times.

But Middlesbrough have sent the 22-year-old to London Road where he could line up with last season’s partner Jack Baldwin at the heart of the Posh defence.

Baldwin signed in time for tonight’s League One clash with Sheffield United and Darren Ferguson named him on the bench.

He has been given a squad number of 21

It is a huge blow for Cooper to see the former Arsenal youngster go to Peterborough.

Boro had been keen for Burgess to join a League One club while the player was known to be keen on a return to the Vic.
