FORMER Sunderland midfielders Dean Whitehead and Rory Delap are among seven players released by Stoke City.

Ex-Black Cats captain Whitehead managed just 12 Premier League starts last term, but had previously been a regular under former boss Tony Pulis. He managed just three goals in 132 appearances for Stoke after arriving from Sunderland for around £3million in 2009.

Long throw expert Delap has also departed the Potters with the end of his contract. Jermaine Pennant, Carlo Nash, Matthew Upson, Matthew Lund and Mamady Sidibe have also left the club.

Coaches Dave Kemp, Mark O’Connor, Adrian Pennock, Paul Maxwell, Dave Kevan and Gerry Francis have also left as new boss Mark Hughes looks to appoint his own backroom staff.
