CONNOR Wickham is expected to make a surprise return to action for Sunderland’s clash against second bottom QPR tomorrow.
Wickham was due to be sidelined for a fortnight with a calf problem after pulling out during the warm-up prior to last week’s FA Cup victory at Fulham.
But tests have shown that the 21-year-old avoided suffering a pulled muscle, and he is due to participate in a light training session tomorrow morning.
Providing Wickham comes through that unscathed, he should be included in the squad for tomorrow night’s visit of QPR.
Sunderland boss Gus Poyet said today: “Connor should be back with no problems.”
Full-back Billy Jones should also be involved at the Stadium of Light, but Jack Rodwell, Emanuele Giaccherini, Will Buckley and Lee Cattermole will remain on the sidelines.
Poyet added: “Jack is going to be a doubt. Him, Lee Cattermole, Buckley and Giaccherini are likely to be the ones missing tomorrow.
“But we are alright. It’s not bad.
“And then for the weekend, Giaccherini and Rodwell should be alright.
“That’s good because it’s a moment in time now where we need everybody to be available and give me the chance to pick the best team.”
