Middlesbrough’s hopes of a flying start to their Championship campaign were dashed as Barnsley recorded a first home win since March today.
Craig Davies’s goal on the stroke of half-time – he was set up David Perkins and drove past Boro’s Jason Steele from the edge of the area – proved enough to settle the issue.
Keith Hill’s side impressed and they could have won by more, with Davies, Stephen Foster and Jacob Mellis all going close.
For Boro, it is back to the drawing board after a below-par performance which dampened their pre-season hopes of a promotion push.
New signing Emmanuel Ledesma had a chance to equalise late on as he turned a loose ball wide and despite a late onslaught, the hosts held firm.
