Alan Shearer reveals why he's worried for Newcastle under pal and ex-Sunderland boss Steve Bruce

Shearer warned big pal Steve Bruce against taking the United job after Rafa Benitez left for China, and says after watching the first two games under the ex-Sunderland boss, he fears they will be relegated from the Premier League.

And he pulled no punches in slating every aspect of Newcastle’s structure and team play, from defensive right through to attack.

“I am really worried about what I have seen so far from Newcastle – and I think relegation is a real possibility,” Shearer said in his Sun column.

“Before the season, I thought there might be three worse teams than Steve Bruce’s side. But on the evidence of two matches, I’m definitely concerned.

“Against Norwich, Newcastle were also all over the place defensively and they got what they deserved – a hiding.

“Rafa Benitez’s strength when he was in charge was making the team well-organised and, at times, difficult to beat.

“But at Carrow Road, Newcastle were very poor defensively, had no creativity in midfield and there was nothing up front.”

Newcastle travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in the Premier League.
